ABSTRACT
During a Category 5 hurricane, the entire city lost power. My asthma flared up, and I desperately needed oxygen. When I made my way to the emergency medical kit in the dark, I found it empty. From the living room came the sound of oxygen hissing out of a valve, followed by Sophie Duskmere, my adopted sister's cheerful laughter. "This pure oxygen feels so cool when it sprays out. The room really does feel less stuffy now." My boyfriend, Luceris Fairwyn, spoke gently in the darkness. "You're too delicate to put up with this musty smell. It's only two canisters of oxygen. If you want to spray them, then go ahead." I clutched my heaving chest, my face deathly pale, and pointed at the empty canisters on the floor. "That oxygen was keeping me alive! My blood oxygen level has already dropped below 80%!" My older brother, Evander Quillmere, let out a mocking laugh. He then told Zephyra Crowhurst, Sophie's friend, to toss me a torn plastic bag. "Novalie Quillmere, every time Sophie is happy, you pretend to be sick to get sympathy. Practice breathing into that bag. You won't die from it, so stop ruining everyone's mood." They always said Sophie Duskmere was too delicate to endure the slightest hardship, so they made me give her everything good before I could have any for myself. Later, they drove to a luxury hotel to escape the hurricane. While backing out, they even ran over my inhaler, which I had dropped near the entrance. In the emergency room, the nurse listened to what had happened and trembled with anger, calling it attempted murder. Wearing an oxygen mask, I looked at the message on my phone from Evander, asking me to bring a phone charger to the hotel. My heart finally grew calm. The first thing I did after getting oxygen was leave the group to chat with all five of them. If they didn't care whether I lived or died, then there was no reason for me to keep any of them in my life.
