ABSTRACT
The day before we were supposed to get our marriage license, Henry Wallace told me I could pick out my own wedding ring and brought me to a jewelry store.
Celine Bailey tagged along too. Henry said she had great taste, so he'd already asked her to help pick out everything from the wedding invitations to the table centerpieces.
The sales clerk slipped a ring onto my ring finger and smiled. "This one complements you so well, bride-to-be."
I was just about to gush about how much I loved it when Henry turned to Celine with a grin. "You've got the better eye. You pick for her."
Celine pointed at the plain, unadorned band next to the one I was wearing. "Go with this one. Zoe has such delicate hands. Overly fussy designs would just look tacky on her."
Henry closed his hand around mine, slipped the ring right off my finger, and set it back in its box with a soft click.
"We'll go with what she says. Be good, don't be stubborn over such a small thing."
I stared at my now-empty finger, and memories from our childhood came surging up unbidden.
Celine had always loved playing her little "choose for her" game. She picked my dresses, my seat in class, even which university I applied to. Even she, decided what message got written on my birthday cakes every year.
After so long of letting her call the shots, I really didn't know how to make my own choices anymore. I'd glance at her face before ordering food at a restaurant, ask if she liked something before I bought any new clothes, and swallow down my own hurt if something upset me, scared I'd be called a buzzkill if I so much as cried.
Celine smiled sweetly at me. "You don't mind, right, Zoe?"
Henry squeezed my fingertip gently. It felt half like a reward for going along, half like a warning not to kick up a fuss.
"Cut it out. We're still picking up our marriage license tomorrow."
I slowly pulled my hand out of his grip.
This was the first time in twenty years I didn't wait for the two of them to decide things for me.
My voice was steady, sharper than it had ever been when I spoke, "She picks the ring. She picks the wedding. Then she can be the bride too."
