The Night Shift They Gave Me

Suspense/Thriller
ABSTRACT
The chart note appeared at 10:12 p.m. I never wrote it. I’m the newest nurse on the cardiac step-down floor, so when the day-shift charge nurse begs me to cover another night shift, I say yes. Two aides. Eighteen patients. One confused, fall-risk patient who keeps trying to leave his bed. Then an urgent warning appears in his file—Do not leave unattended—timestamped after my shift began. A sitter is requested. None arrives. If he falls, the system will say I was warned and failed. With the hospital cutting the least senior nurses, I know this is not a charting error. Someone is building a paper trail to destroy me. I have eleven hours left, no help coming, and an audit log that may name whoever set me up. But in a hospital where everyone is replaceable, proving it could cost me everything.
