ABSTRACT
Nobody thanks the girl with the mop.
Nora Castillo is sixteen, allergic to mornings, and three generations deep into the family business: cleaning up the wreckage superheroes leave behind.
Crushed cars. Scorched sidewalks. Walls coated in something that used to be a building and now just sticks to everything, including her.
Her grandfather did it. Her dad does it. And now, whether she likes it or not, so does she.
The heroes get the headlines. The parades. The action figures.
Nora gets the invoice, a broom that's seen better decades, and a father who acts like scrubbing hero residue off brick is some kind of sacred calling. It is not. It is a Tuesday.
But when the messes start getting bigger, and stranger, and a little too convenient to be accidents, Nora starts noticing things the news cameras never catch. Patterns. Cover stories. A version of "heroic" that looks a lot more complicated up close than it does from a safe distance.
Turns out the cleanup crew sees everything the heroes hope nobody's watching.
Now Nora has to figure out how much of her family's legacy is actually worth being proud of, before she inherits a business built on cleaning up messes some people never wanted found in the first place.
Funny, sharp, and full of heart, this is a story about the people who hold the world together after the "saving" is done, and the sixteen-year-old who's done sweeping other people's secrets under the rug.
Some legacies aren't worth cleaning up for free.
